Folk-rock siren Kristi Stassinopoulou at “Südwind” in the Tafelhalle

“When you’ve spent some long, light-flooded days in silent coves on the beach, played music happily together according to the rhythm of the tides while watching the waves, you really don’t see why you should go back to town with its dark buildings” tells us the siren of Greek folk-rock, Kristi Stassinopoulou, when we discuss the making of her CD “The Secrets of the Rocks” after she has just ended her exciting, energy-laden concert in the Nürnberger Tafelhalle to the same theme.
To Kristi Stassinopoulou, who lives in Athens, apartments and flats are “cages for our energy”. Consequently, the singer reminiscent of Patti Smith likes to stage herself with widely spread arms “like a bird on the horizon” who seeks to break the cage’s bars with power and intensity. It is this longing for nature, combined with the knowledge of the ecological disaster taking place, that is conveyed by the rocking space sound with U2-like guitars and elements borrowed from the legendary hippie jazz-rocker Gong. Stassinopoulou has sharpened the sound of her previous CD “Echotropia” (2001) by paradoxically using the electronic arsenal of the third-last generation. Live on stage, she follows the “Eight Miles High” aesthetics of the Birds – no doubt the most freaked-out figures in psychedelic folk-rock of all times – but also the latest bands of Spanish singers: Ojos de Brujo, Amparanoia and the Valencian band L´Ham de Foc.

Nach langen, lichtdurchfluteten Tagen an stillen Buchten am Strand, wo man hochzufrieden mit Blick aus die Wellen zusammen nach dem Rhythmus der Gezeiten musiziert, weiß man gar nicht mehr, warum man in die Städte und ihre dunkel Häuser zurückkehrt erzählt die kleine griechische Folkrock-Sirene Kristi Stassinopoulou nach ihrem mitreißenden Hochenergie-Konzert in der Tafelhalle von der Entstehung ihres Konzertalbums “The Secrets of the Rocks” – “Das Geheimnis der Felsen”.

Wohnungen sind für die in Athen lebende Kristi Stassinopoulou “Energiekäfige”. So inszeniert sich die kleine Sängerin mit dem Patti Smith-Appeal auf der Bühne gerne mit weit ausgebreiteten Armen “wie ein Vogel am Horizont” der mit Kraft und Intensität die Gitterstäbe zu sprengen sucht. Genau diese Natursehnsucht bei gleichzeitigem Wissen um das ökologische Drama zeichnet den rockigen Space-Sound mit U2-Gitarren und Anleihen and die legendären Hippie-Jazzrocker Gong aus. Stassinopoulou hat ihren Sound seit der Vorgänger CD “Echotropia” (2001) mit elektronischen Tretmienen der vorvorletzten Generation auf paradoxe Weise zugeschärft. Live lehnt sie sich an die “Eight Miles High” – Ästhetik der Birds and –fraglos die ausgeflipptesten psychedelischen Folkrock-Vögel aller Zeiten, aber auch an die spanischen Sängerinnen-Bands der Stunde: Ojos de Brujo, Amparanoia und die valencianische Band L´ Ham de Foc.

NÜRNBERGER NACHRICHTEN – Review

It is not necessarily always suffering that gives inspiration. Sometimes a few days spent on a rocky Aegean shore will do, where the days come and go as the waves, and where there’s nothing to do but listening to the wind and watching the sea shaping the stones. The Greek poet and musician Kristi Stassinopoulou has the gift of capturing the atmosphere of such days in her art – without falling back on the cliché of sirtaki folklore.
In fact, what the likeable singer and her three fellow-musicians display before an unfortunately not-too-numerous audience in the Nürnberger Tafelhalle as part of the “Südwind” series of concerts has little if anything to do with the background noise in Greek restaurants that has shaped our idea of the music played in that Mediterranean country. Kristi’s music is frequently described as “Balkans-ethnotrance” – not too bad a label for this original style where tone colour, expression and rhythmics are much more important than sophisticated composition.

Between East and West

Various drums, diverse exotic-looking stringed and wind instrument, electric guitar, saz and lute, plus electronic drum loops are woven into enchanting tunes that are balanced on the interface between East and West just as on that between tradition and modernity.

Kristi Stassinopoulou grew up with the rock bands of the Athens underground. Consequently, her Greek fans are more taken aback when she includes a folk song on her CD than by all-too-daring musical experiments, she is amused to tell. She sends her clear, powerful voice with its meditational appeal over long ties, which implants in the listener an idea of huge expanses and weightlessness, even without comprehension of the words.

For a last ‘encore’, the band of four come off the stage to settle down on the ground and sing a final song unplugged, which is beautiful enough to make you cry. This moment bears as much intimacy as joining friends for a glass of wine on the beach at night.

Wind und Wellen

Es muss nicht immer Leidensdruck sein, der inspiriert. Es können auch ein paar Tage an einem felsigen Strand in der Ägäis genügen, wo die Tage mit den Wellen vergehen und es nichts zu tun gibt, als dem Wind zu lauschen und zuzusehen, wie das Meer die Steine formt. Die Griechin Kristi Stassinopoulou hat die Gabe, solche Stimmungen in Poesie und Musik einzufangen –ohne dafür aus folkloristische Sirtaki-Klischees zurückgreifen zu müssen.

Tatsächlich hat das, was die sympathische Sängerin mit ihren drei Mitstreitern im Rahmen der “Südwind” Reihe einem leider recht überschaubaren Publikum in der Nürnberger Tafelhalle präsentiert, wenig bis gar nichts zu tun mit der griechischen lokalen üblichen Hintergrundbeschallung, die im Allgemeinen unsere Vorstellung von der Musik des Mittelmeerlandes prägt. Als “Balkan-Ethnotrance” wird ihre Musik gerne beschrieben – kein schlechtes Etikett für diesen eigenwilligen Stil, bei dem Klangfarbe, Ausdruck und Rhythmik weit wichtiger sind, als ausgefuchste Kompositionen.

Zwischen Orient und Okzident 

Verschiedene Trommeln, diverse exotisch anmutende Streich- und Blasinstrumente, elektrische Gitarre, Saz und Laute, dazu Drum-Lups aus dem Sampler verwerben sich zu einer berückenden Musik, die die Schnittstellen von Orient und Okzident genauso organisch verbindet, wie die zwischen Tradition und Moderne.

Kristi Stassinopoulou ist mit den Athener Underground-Rockbands aufgewachsen. Ihre griechischen Fans irritiert sie eher damit, ein folkloristisches Stück auf ihre CD zu nehmen als durch zu gewagte Experimente, wie sie amüsiert erzählt. Mit klarer, kräftiger Stimme und meditativer Eindringlichkeit singt sie weite Bögen, die dem textunkundigen Zuhörer eine Ahnung von Weite und Schwerelosigkeit vermitteln.

Zur letzten Zugabe setzen sich die Vier vor Bühne auf den Boden, um unverstärkt ein letztes, zum Weinen schönes Lied anzustimmen. Dieser Moment ist so intim, als wäre man am abendlichen Strand zu einem Glas Wein eingeladen worden.
